What makes tar & chip different
It's a sister process to tarmac, with a twist. Instead of finishing with a smooth wearing course, we flood the tarmac binder layer with loose stone chippings, then pass a heavy roller over it. The chippings embed into the tar permanently.
You end up with:
- Appearance of gravel — natural stone texture and colour.
- Durability of tarmac — stones are locked in; can't migrate.
- Natural grip — textured surface, great on sloped drives.
- Cost between gravel and tarmac — about £55–£85/m² installed.
Chipping options
- Granite (charcoal) — sharp, contemporary, hard-wearing.
- Flint (silver) — traditional UK country-lane look.
- Golden limestone — warm, Cotswold-friendly.
- Red granite — dramatic, uncommon, matches red-brick homes.
- Pink quartz — sparkling, expensive, statement piece.
Where tar & chip beats the alternatives
- Long drives (100m+) — cheaper per metre than block paving or resin.
- Rural estates — fits the vernacular aesthetic without breaking the bank.
- Sloped drives — better grip than smooth tarmac.
- Farm lanes with occasional heavy vehicles — holds up better than gravel, cheaper than tarmac.
Where tar & chip isn't right:
Small tight urban drives — the install economics don't work. Block paving or resin is better.
If you want a perfectly smooth surface — go tarmac or resin bound.

Maintenance — minimal
- For the first month, a handful of loose chippings may come free. Sweep them back on. By month 2, it's locked.
- Every 7–10 years a "re-chip" can be applied to refresh the surface — much cheaper than relaying.
- No weeds, no jointing, no sealing required.
